Galley Kitchen with Slab Backsplash

Grant Avenue, Winnipeg August 2026

A galley kitchen where the working run is only a few feet deep, so every seam and every grout line would have shown. We ran the same quartz up the wall as a full-height slab backsplash instead of tiling it, which removes the horizontal break behind the counter and makes the narrow run read as one surface. The peninsula that divides the kitchen from the living room takes a mitred waterfall at the open end, and a single large undermount bowl sits under the window rather than a divided sink, because in a kitchen this size the extra bowl costs more than it gives.

Slab Instead of Tile

Running the counter stone up the wall to the uppers removes the seam and the grout lines behind the working run. In a kitchen this narrow that one decision does more for the room than any other.

Waterfall on the Open End

The peninsula is the first thing you see from the living room, so the quartz mitres over the end and runs to the floor rather than stopping at a cabinet side.
